Multiple Data Parallelism with HPF and KeLP

Abs t r ac t . High Performance Fortran (HPF) is an effective language for implementing regular data parallel applications on distributed memory architectures, but it is not well suited to irregular, block-structured applications such as multiblock and adaptive mesh methods. A solution to this problem is to use a non-HPF SPMD program to coordinate multiple concurrent HPF tasks, each operating o...

Communicating data-parallel tasks: an MPI library for HPF

High Performance Fortran (HPF) has emerged as a standard dialect of Fortran for data-parallel computing. However, HPF does not support task parallelism or heterogeneous computing adequately. This paper presents a summary of our work on a library-based approach to support task parallelism, using MPI as a coordination layer for HPF. This library enables a wide variety of applications, such as mul...

High Performance Fortran 2.0

High Performance Fortran (HPF) is an informal standard for extensions to Fortran to assist its implementation on parallel architectures, particularly for data-parallel computation. Among other things, it includes directives for expressing data distribution across multiple memories, extra facilities for expressing data parallel and concurrent execution, and a mechanism for interfacing HPF to oth...

High Performance Fortran for aerospace applications

This paper focuses on the use of High Performance Fortran (HPF) for important classes of algorithms employed in aerospace applications. HPF is a set of Fortran extensions designed to provide users with a high-level interface for programming data parallel scienti c applications, while delegating to the compiler/runtime system the task of generating explicitly parallel message-passing programs. W...

A Coordination Layer for Exploiting Task Parallelism with HPF

This paper introduces COLTHPF, a run{time support for exploiting task parallelism within HPF programs, which can be employed by a compiler of a high-level coordination language to structure a set of data-parallel HPF tasks according to popular paradigms of task-parallelism. We use COLTHPF to program a computer vision application and report the results obtained by running the application on an S...

A Library-Based Approach to Task Parallelism in a Data-Parallel Language

Pure data-parallel languages such as High Performance Fortran version 1 (HPF) do not allow efficient expression of mixed task/data-parallel computations or the coupling of separately compiled data-parallel modules. In this paper, we show how these common parallel program structures can be represented, with only minor extensions to the HPF model, by using a coordination library based on the Mess...
